A couple of tips, if there is a direct flight from ATL or CLT drive there

it will be worth it. You'll probably be able to find a hotel that will also include parking and a shuttle for a reasonable rate so get there the night before. There is a direct flight at dulles but that might be too far to drive. Minimize the number of connections at all costs.

Get the TSA app for clearing customs on the way home. I have global entry but the TSA app is almost as quick and free.

Be prepared to pay for an aisle seat...I like the exit rows and bulkheads but I am 6'4" and I prefer not having bashed in knee caps.

Get a prescription for ambien if you want to sleep, but try it at home a few times to make sure it doesn't make you crazy

Don't stress about the length of the flight, just sit back and relax, watch movies, read, stretch every two hours, and you'll be landing before you know it.

Bring your own food on the plane and snacks- eating also passes the time

If you like to drink alcohol, foreign carriers are more liberal...wander to the back after the service and you can talk your way into refills.

What ever airline you chose make sure you get the miles. When ever I fly star alliance flights I give them my united mileage account number to keep the miles accruing in one account.

Look into your vaccinations now for Africa, a few of them require a series of shots, not a one time thing.

Make sure to have a copy of your passport and shot records (yellow vaccination) with you at all times

Good luck!
