were in the dumps a few years ago. That was ONLY because of Weaver's ridiculous coaching decision (RIP). Had he canned SG early in the cycle and hired a competent head coach, it's possible Buzz wouldn't even be here right now. At THIS point, SG's contributions to the big picture of VT basketball still exceed those of Buzz Williams. I've said before I think the ceiling is higher under Buzz, but he took over a MUCH better situation than SG - i.e., more recent success IN the very same ACC, much better facilities as a result of that ACC membership and the more recent success, and so on. Two straight NCAAT appearances has us headed in the right direction (especially if we actually win a game this year....), but we're still a program that springs some big upsets and looks horrible a game or two later. That part really isn't any different than SG's era.
