He said SG's contributions to VT hoops outweighed Buzz's. (At this point)

I don't agree.

However, as to your point, I wouldn't necessarily say SG elevated the position to allow the hire, although I understand what you mean.

I think the ACC and Whit Babcock elevated the position. We could have kept Ricky Stokes for 5 more years and then gone straight to James Johnson for 4 earlier years, maintaining the dumpster fire status that was VT hoops before bringing Whit Babcock in to clean it up and he would have still hired Buzz, IMO. Whit is the MAIN guy behind our success, IMO. That is the biggest home run VT athletics has hit since Beamer, and he may be bigger.

When Buzz came to VT, the VT hoops coaching position had to be about as bad as it got in Power 5. Just because Greenberg was here and VT went to an NCAA tournament and was competitive for the better part of a decade did nothing to change the fact that our hoops history is pretty much zero.

When hired, Buzz told everybody that it would take 3 years for VT to be competitive and he meant it. 3 years is two full recruiting classes and some transfers coming in and sitting out a year, then gelling for a year, and also cleaning house of current players that don't fit the system. Then we compete. Whatever success Greenberg had in the 2000's did nothing to make Buzz say "Yeah, 3 years is doable! I'm glad it isn't 4 years!" I would expect 3 years is a worst case scenario for any program that is at complete rock bottom and needs a rebuild from the ground up.

By the way, do you remember early on how often Buzz would say that we needed to change the culture of VT basketball? He was saying that to VT athletic fans and $$$ donors. You don't say that if the culture is "elevated", no matter how little. You say that if there is zero elevation.
