Random Facts about the RPI, KenPom and the 2018 Bracket

RPI:
First off, UVA got screwed in the amount of top RPI teams in their bracket. They have 6 of the top 17 teams rated in the RPI (UVA, Cinci, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arizona and Nevada). Kansas was next with 5, Xavier and Villanova have 3. Oof.

NCSt-Seton Hall is the biggest disparity on the 8/9 line. RPI64 v RPI31 ranked teams. (VT is RPI61 v Alabama's RPI42) The closest of any seeds is actually aTm (7 seed) & Providence (10 seed) at RPI29 v RPI32. Next is Miami v Loyola-Chicago. Miami is RPI28 with L-C being RPI22. You'd think that's a Round 2 matchup between 4 and 5 seeds, but it is the 6/11 matchup in the first round in UVA's bracket. Tough draw for Miami and Tennessee.

St. Bonnie's v UCLA features a RPI24 v RPI36 game. Those RPI ranks are better than half the at-large field.

Radford is by far the best 16 seed in the play-in games (RPI128 vs 222, 232, & 279). I was a little surprised they are in them. Also surprised that UVA didn't get a play-in team, though UMBC is pretty bad.

KenPom:
Xavier has the most Top 20 KenPom ranked teams (6), Then Kansas and Villanova have 5 with UVA at 4.

Missouri/FSU game is the tighest margin with KenPom rankings of 38/35. VT's is the widest margin on the 8/9 line with VT ranked 32 and 'Bama 51.

Funny enough, the 7/10 games are pretty close in these rankings, except for the aTm/Providence game. aTm is KP30 and Providence is KP64. That's a huge difference, and in stark contrast to the RPI numbers.

Main Takeaway here: The committee is diverging from the RPI in a big way. These numbers are much more diverse in their seeding and who is in/out of the tournament. I think the committee did an excellent job this year with the exception of leaving MTSU out. The seeding looks very reasonable as well, with the exception of Oklahoma (who should be replaced with the aforementioned MTSU). The new quandrant system, along with the advanced metric rankings on the sheet, seems to have done really well this year. Hopefully it's not just an anomaly.
