Actually, it may be a valid point of reference
I lived in Charlotte previously. Sometimes my place of origin (a small town in Southwest Virginia) would come up in conversation, and I had a really hard time finding a common point of reference with folks down there. Conversation usually went something like this (after dispensing with the distinction between "Southwest Virginia" and "South West Virginia," of course)....
Charlottean: Where is your hometown located?
HF: Are you familiar with Bluefield?
Charlottean: No.
HF: How about Roanoke?
Charlottean: No.
HF: The part of Virginia that sticks out between West Virginia and Tennessee?
Charlottean: Hmm.... Not really. What major metropolitan area would be closest to your hometown?
HF: Technically speaking, probably Charlotte.
Charlottean: How far is it from here?
HF: About three hours, give or take.
So yeah.... based on the view of the outside world from the Queen City, Radford is proximal to Charlotte.
