It's not even all just about wins and losses either.

For people who actually understand basketball, VT was legitimately good this year, especially offensively. You don't nearly sweep Tobacco road and take down the #1 team in the country on the road without some consistency of success. I have some similar experiences with UVA basketball friends, who only casually follow football, and they hold the football program up to the same measuring stick as bball, which is unfair at this point. Just getting to a bowl game this year was huge for us, but you'd never know it with those guys. Yeah, it sucks getting blown out by Navy, no question about that, but you have to keep everything in perspective. The only bowling Mike London was doing was at AMF. But back to VT bball: the eye test showed a team clearly improving by leaps and bounds, over the course of most of the season, and got some huge pelts to show for it, including Duke, UNC, and UVA. The ACC had 9 NCAA tournament teams and 3 NIT teams, meaning 12 out of 15 schools made postseason tournaments, and 11 out of 15 schools won 20+ games. That's a ridiculously stacked conference, and Tech was clearly in the top third of that group, regardless of what happened in the tourney. Miami and NCSU didn't exactly fare much better.
