Blacksburg and he has repeatedly tried to leave, why is he still here?

that narrative doesn't really hold up

I suppose it's possible that his wife has said "I will hate everywhere but XYZ," and that job hasn't opened yet, but why would he have "tried to leave" if that's the case?
