To be clear, I have no inside knowledge or sources, this is purely speculation on my part.

First, I have lived in Atlanta for 20 years now and I can assure you, most GT fans I know are just as happy Paul Johnson is retiring as we are. In fact, I can't think of a single GT fan I know who was an ardent supporter of Johnson. I sincerely doubt you will see a disciple of his, or of the triple option, hired at GT. They understand how much that system has hurt their ability to recruit on both sides of the ball over the years and they are over it.

Number two, they absolutely have a structural disadvantage re: their academic requirements so they need a coach who can help overcome that (which is the whole reason Paul Johnson was hired in the first place).

Number three, they live in the shadow of UGA so they need a coach who can put the spotlight on them for a change.

Mike Leach is the perfect fit. It would be an exciting hire that would pump real life into the fan base (which honestly isn't that bad). Leach is bold enough to stand up to UGA (and the SEC as a whole really) in their own backyard and his system gives him the chance to win with less talent. And GT would definitely attract attention from QB's and WR's in this part of the country, for sure.

I think GT is in a decent spot to pony up the dough to make a hire like this, especially since they will start seeing extra revenue from the ACC network soon. For his part, I think Leach is ready for a bigger stage and market and let's face it, the ACC Coastal is about as wide open a division as there is in Power 5 football. If you want to play for a conference championship and a shot to make the playoff, its hard to come up with a more direct path. That he has had some dust ups with the Pac 12 officials is just another reason for him to pack up and move on.

And if I'm right, we get to see the Air Raid vs. DBU every year and that wouldn't suck!
