I have no first-hand info on Nolley, but to add a little bit of context...

The investigation by the NCAA is independent of his admission to VT. Schools can pick and choose whoever they decide to get into school. There are obviously guidelines, however.

Once admitted and enrolled in courses, its not the job of admissions to look into the scores and history of its students. Especially if the student is thriving at school currently.

It is part of the job of the NCAA, however, to make sure each athlete are eligible on their own merits. Its very hard to prove someone didnt make it on their own merit, so they also have guidelines on where red flags can be raised. Having a low GPA and a high test score is something that gets flagged. It is very possible to have a low GPA and a high test score. But in cases where there is foul play, a low GPA and a high test score is a common theme. In order to see if thats the case here, it seems the NCAA flagged the test score and asked for a new test. I imagine if the scores were at least similar (or at a level acceptable with his GPA to be eligible), they would accept the score and move on. It seems he didnt reach that score.

This does not trigger a review by VT, because the student was already accepted and enrolled and is doing what is asked of him in the classroom. But it would trigger an ineligibility by the NCAA for as long as Nolley doesnt have a GPA that will allow the new test score to meet NCAA standards. That likely means he could be ineligible until after one or both of the summer sessions next season, depending on the score. If he wasnt deemed eligible after the end of this current semester, he cant possibly be eligible until end of spring semester, well after the season is over.

The NCAA is doing their due diligence in flagging a score that doesnt coincide with a certain GPA, for everyone who said "this was me in high school" then chances are you would be flagged if you played a sport at the D1 level. Ive personally been involved in 2 similar cases (though both players knew coming in they would be ineligible) and its a long process, but its really the best way to assure everything is on the up and up.

Sucks for Nolley if thats the case and he didnt cheat but couldn't replicate his score, but he will gain an extra year of eligibility I'll n the back end and get to concentrate on academics at a time when its most important to do so
