FWIW, our Safeties were horrendous this year
Floyd regressed in a big way. Ladler was awful. after starting out with a really good game. Deablo also terrible this year, though he was playing on one leg for much of the year (I'm honestly not sure if he could have run a 4.8 40 for much of the year he was SLOW).
That said, how much of that is on Nix? The change was made EXTREMELY late in the process and there was little chance for those players to adapt to their new coach. On the other side, regression seemed to be huge. We were hard nosed and physical in the FSU game, including the Safeties. By mid-season, that was GONE.
This isn't me saying to fire Nix. I don't think that that's the answer (like you, I think Mitchell is of more interest). That said, moves will likely be made more strategically with thought placed into who we would be able to get and what they specialize in.
I'm still not a fan of Cornelsen FWIW but I think he bought himself another year late. Perhaps it would be prudent to make some changes to the defense though, or even just bring in another defensive coach (moving Adam Lechtenberg back into admin), which may allow other responsibilities to be shuffled.
