My guess it was a combination of things

first I agree that Clemson trailed for years mainly due to mismanagement etc. They also showed that when a AD and alumni understand what it takes to compete the worked together towards that common goal. The other side of the coin is how does PSU, Kentucky, Wisconsin, etc. continue to have money pour into their programs without winning NCs. There alumni seem to be passionate regardless of outcoming and somehow know that it takes money. Are they more informed, have a better AD that doesn't stagnate? Don't know.

I just know that if you look at the Top 10 schools in revenue and even add in the Top 20 schools they don't change to much and many of them have not won an NC. I also know if you look at the last 30 years and you can go even further back that your chance of winning the NC and not be in the Top 10 in revenue is miniscule. Clemson is the only school in the modern era to win a NC at 25 in revenue and no one outside the Top 25 has done it that I could find.

The situation is only getting worst for schools like VT. The reason, everyone is following the Alabama roadmap which is hiring a bunch of assitants (non-coaches) to ease the burden of coaches whether that is coordinating study halls, reviewing film, reviewing potential prospect film, etc. leaving coaches to coach.

At the end of the day what are we trying to accompish? If its win a NC than every VT fan has to acknowledge the facts above, it takes an injection of money not just showing up on Saturday's.
