It's definitely deeper than sports. But sports is one of the problems.


No college student should pay higher fees/tuition so that athletes (of any sport and gender) can get subsidized college. As it stands now, over a 4-year term, VT students will pay an additional $~1,300 in athletic fees to subsidize the college costs of other VT "student" athletes. This is indefensible, especially in an era of out of control costs and student debt. College sports are not beneficial to society (like, say, subsidizing a poor person's education, or incentivizing STEM degrees). College sports are just a pretense for transfer payments from one student to another without any real moral or economic justification.
