Home game attendance and tickets thoughts

I would like to hear some ideas or discussion about how to ensure that in the future Cassell is full and rocking more often. I can honestly say only a few times have I been lucky enough to be in Cassell for a 99% full house, but when I have it is even more impressive than a sold out Lane stadium as far as the energy and electricity in Blacksburg.

I am very proud of my personal streak of attending at least one home football and one home basketball game as long as I can remember, over 30+ years. However the basketball games that I have attended that should be close to a full house and aren’t bother me. Last night there were 100s of empty seats and I hated to see that for our seniors and for the program. I was lucky enough to be given a ticket at last minute notice and make it to the game.

I know that since I am budget conscious the opportunities for me to attend games are limited. I ask for basketball tickets from my wife every year at Christmas and then go to other games when the price is right or I am offered tickets. Yesterday I was debating driving to Blacksburg without a ticket but already had decided I wasn’t going because of the prices on Stubhub. When I got there I realized several people were selling tickets for very cheap outside, but at the same time the cheapest tickets on stub hub were going for over $30 after taxes and fees. I just want to get in the building and nosebleeds are fine by me but for $30 in a household with kids and 1 full time income that is too steep.

I realize those who buy season tickets make a HUGE investment and I can understand that. What I want to know is why can’t VT find a way to make sure those seats are full and the people who paid for them get at least some of their money back. I saw several people go inside the game last night with extra tickets they couldn’t get rid of, even if they got $10 or $20 back and had that seat filled wouldn’t that be better?

We have come a long way as a program and I am thankful that the place was at 80% capacity last night but I wish we could do it better.

Any ideas or thoughts???

I have been called out as a cheapskate on the ticket board here for looking for cheap tickets for games before, but for the record I personally believe in ticket karma. Someone gave me tickets to the Syracuse game last minute for free, and when I couldn’t find anyone to go with me I gave my extra ticket to a student outside even though a scalper was offering me $40 for the ticket. These tickets has a face value of $70

I just wish we could make sure that Cassell is full more often, it shouldn’t be just when a top 10 team comes to town that the place is at or near capacity.

Thoughts??!
