If the goal....

is to win a national championship and the only way to win that national championship is to get to the NCAA tournament then whatever path is most likely to get a team to the tournament gives them the best odds. Getting to the tournament is goal #1. Being ready and adequately equipped to compete in the tournament is step #2. Balancing all the factors it is not clear that being a brand in the ACC as opposed to just a solid program is necessary to accomplish the goal and, more importantly, being a good program in the ACC might be the equivalent of a Top 2 or 3 program in leagues not as strong as basketball. This is not the college football playoff where, at present, if you are out of the Top 2 in your league you are done.

This is not to say Buzz will not leave and depending on the offer that maybe he has to leave. It is merely to say that a national championship is accessible further down the pecking order in the ACC than most other conferences.
