Is the UVa-Texas Tech type styles of play hurting the game?

Don't know where you all are at but here in the Southern Plains a lot, and I mean a lot, of people call in to sports talk radio here and say that watching a college game is getting painful and many say they're giving up on it because of all the defensive minded coaches and games (Bennett, Beard, Izzo, and the like). Attendance at college b'ball games has been down I believe in recent years. They are tired of watching 56-52 games and the like.
I don't know whether you agree but if so what rule changes could be made to help and make the games more entertaining. I have mixed feelings but I admit I sometimes miss the 'old days' of NC State, Maryland, UCLA etc of the 60s and 70s and VT in the early 1980s with scores in the 80s and 90s.
