A middling in the ACC is a harder job than most other jobs.

In any other conference (other than the Big 10 and to an extent the SEC last year) if you were a good coach/recruiter/player developer, you could put a team together to compete for an NCAA bid yearly. In the ACC, if you the stars don't align on recruiting and team development, it is very very difficult to compete with the Top 3 - 5 teams in the ACC:

1. Duke
2. UNC
3. UVA
4. Louisville
5. Syracuse

You have to be a minimum of 0.500 in conference to make the NCAAs and you have likely little chance to win versus the Top 3 teams yearly and a difficult time winning against 4 and 5. You are basically competing against the other 10 teams for 2-3 spots. Everyone else is trying hard as well, so I would say realistically you can hope to make the NCAAs 1 out of every 3-4-5 years. I think MY can do that, but we would be remiss if we think we could hire a coach that could send us to the NCAAs 3 years in a row or 3 out of 5 years based on our history.

Let's enjoy the ride, hopefully the salary and his connection to the region/university lights a fire under him where he is going to work hard and try to do it!
