A few things to consider about Mike Young hire

1. Since 2002, he's coached Wofford to the NCAA tournament 5 times. VT has only been in the tournament 4 times in that same span. Let's not act like he's taking over a blue blood.

2. His teams won their conference tournament 5 times in that span, 4 of times they won both the regular season and conf tourney. I understand it's different with VT and their conf tourneys, but VT never has any level of success in conference tourneys, other than maybe winning 1 game.
(tidbit: they finished regular season 1st 4 times, and won conference tourney each time. Impressive, always a huge amount of pressure on the #1 see in those 1 bid leagues).

3. He's a local guy at his dream job. There is something to be said for a guy who IS home, and not looking for VT to be a stepping stone. Sure, we don't want to just give the job to any guy with local ties, but he has clearly earned it. He put in his time, he's had success, and he is a very well respected Xs and O's guy.

4. Can he be a good recruiter at an ACC school? Who knows. Sure, he hasn't been crushing it at Wofford, but you can't compete with the big dogs at a school like that, you get leftovers. Why spend time with elite AAU guys at Wofford? You know you aren't getting them. There's no reason he can't get his kind of 3* and 4* guys to come here. He'll have a lot more pull in living rooms with an ACC offer than a Wofford offer. To think he's gonna continue to pull Wofford level recruits is a bit disingenuous.

Is it an absolute slam dunk? Don't think we can say that, and it's surely not a splashy hire, that makes you win the press conference. But this could end up being a sneaky good hire with some staying power. It's disappointing that Buzz isn't leaving him with a bit more to work with, but it is what it is.

But I think there is something to be said with finding a high level basketball coach as a fit for VT. The Buzz era was great, but it's hollow. There was a constant cloud over when, not if, he was going to leave. And then when he leaves, it's stripped to the foundation. Is that the kind of rotation we'd like to continue? Or do you go for a lesser name, but potentially just as good coach with some staying power? I think it's a reasonable approach by Whit, even if it has risk.
