Reading between the lines.

Will Stewart said, the $3.8 mil was just more than VT could match. Or something to that effect.

That tells me there was either an unofficial bidding process on how much it would cost to keep Buzz or Texas A&M vetting the situation enough to were they knew exactly how much to offer that was the minimum that VT could not match. In other words, A&M did their homework.

If VT had gone up to say $4.5 million and gone even further into the red in order to keep Buzz, I believe Texas A&M would have just matched it. They had already hired 2 of Buzzes former assistants and there were no other candidates in their search. They make $170 mil a year or so off their sports so spending an extra $700,000 more, than they had to pay, would have been nothing to them. I think we were going to lose Buzz regardless. Our counteroffering did nothing more than give him a fatter paycheck.

2.) An easier situation to win and he didn't think VT could compete at the same level next year as we had the last few years, but mainly to go home. He hasn't made a secret about it. He's chased every high profile job that's been available for the last 4 years just to keep his name relevant and now was the time to leave.

3.) We couldn't have done more to keep him than we did. It wasn't best to let him go, we had no choice in the matter.
