At first I was disappointed and felt like Whit settled for a quick replacement. Now that I've absorbed what he has done, and very importantly, his demeanor I'm actually optimistic. When Beamer was hired he was seen as a good old local boy who played at VT and had coached at a lower level school with some success. Beamer followed several blow-hards (Sharpe, Coffey, Dooley) and he seemed like a mighty low key guy. We know how that played out. Now we have a low key local guy who has had success coming in to our BB program as HC. Like Beamer, he's not promising a national championship and he's the opposite of the blowhard Buzz Williams. To be fair, I never liked Buzz after he equated himself early on to future Hall of Famer Frank Beamer. He never grasped the fact that Beamer is a legend, and somehow he thought he was his equivalent (that would never happen because of his arrogant personality and lack of similar accomplishments). In retrospect I'm actually glad that Buzz went somewhere else - I have wanted a guy with class, who acts with class, looks like class, and behaves with class, like Tony Bennett at uva. Not saying that our new HC is equivalent to Bennett, but he sure as hell is closer to that model than Buzz Wms. I hope Buzz lasts a few years at aTm and has a lot of accomplishments prior to his predicted next move. But more than that, I hope our new BB coach has major success here, with class and with a demeanor we can all be proud of, and if so, that he can retire here successfully as Frank Beamer did. Maybe model his success after that of Tony Bennett and be equally admired.
