You can't try to match the top teams with finesse.
They will get the top skilled players and get the calls in games. The alternative is to field a team that plays a different style of game that keeps games close, negates their advantage on height, length, and speed, and conditions the officials to allow more physical play. It's been mentioned in the past that Big East and Big Ten teams had a lot of success in tournaments since their officials allow more contact during the regular season. Some of the teams having the most success with this focus on defense in recent years have been teams like Florida State, Virginia, Miami, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech.
