The media has a long time tradition of

to print". I'll give everyone the benefit of the doubt. At some point, whether when they first get the scoop, to researching the scoop, or to press "send" to submit the story, a reporter has to decide if this should be reported. Even then, the editors will do the same check. Believe it or not, it happens every day in political reporting. ;-)

Personally, I had the honor to both write for the CT at Tech and work for the Sports Information office. After the disastrous 1992 football season, the CT sports office chose to take Beamer and the football team to task for their bad season. Their take was written in Bill Brill's tradition of ripping Virginia Tech for even existing. Well their are boundaries you don't cross, and that day, the CT went to far. I was glad I was in the SI office then, not the CT, because the Tech Director of Media Relations tore the CT reporters to shreds in his office for printing such a negative piece in the school paper.

EVen though we want in depth all knowing stuff from TSL, the Roanoke or Richmond papers, there is a point at which good reporters have to decide if its right or fair for them to report all they know. As we look back 10 months, it all makes sense, from ODU to the transfer portal. But its appropriate that it was reported in the rearview mirror by Sports Illustrated.
