Who are we?

In the fall of 1979, I walked onto campus and became a fan of everything Virginia Tech. Over the years, I have seen more than my share of victories and heart-wrenching losses. That being said, who are we becoming as a fan base?? I am struggling…I understand the frustration, the passion and the desire for success, but I understand how hard these kids work, how frustrating it can be when we struggle. There is a lot of back and forth about “fans” and what it means to be a “Hokie”, but a lot the comments made I just do not understand. We have every right to be thoughtful, critical and passionate about the program…period. When emotion and frustration overwhelm thought and rationality…maybe it has gone too far.
Here is a brief re-cap of some of the most interesting titles containing the word “suck” from the Subscriber Board during the game:
“Coaching and strength and conditioning suck”. **
“Our QB sucks”
“Ill suck ass for $20 😂 and save us some money “
“Our team is small...smaller than Furman. Recruiting sucks”

These are four of many, many more. Is this the right way to act with 18 to 22 year old kids? Where is the line between open communication and over the line? Where is the line between some 60 year old dentist typing on a message board during a game and actually acting like an adult? The frustration is intense, but where is the line? At what point do we say…these kids are doing their very best representing the school and community I love and that is good enough for me. Where is the line we draw between a Coach who is paid very well to coach these kids and the kids themselves??

Everyone is frustrated, but we won. Where is the line between right and wrong…where is the line between fair and unfair…where is the right line? I don’t know the exact answer, but I know that some of you are over the line and in any other area of your life you would be embarrassed.
