All kinds of (successful) coaches in this world. Two stand out to me-

1. Coach has the team prepared for battle. They go out against the enemy and win.

2. Team loses. Using that loss as motivation, coach prepares the team for battle. They go out against the enemy and win.

That could be a huge oversimplification of the VT process, and the UM game could end up as either a flash in the pan where a smart DC observed trends on available footage and beat the opposing QB better than previous rivals, or it could be a launch pad for a more developed direction and new QB, where VT actually becomes bowl eligible (I do not yet have high hopes for a hooha victory at this point).

In either case, I’d still rather have coach #1.

VT spent decades with coach #2. He was a great coach, but year after year, the game plan was simplified and VT played respectable seasons after early season losses.

Void this week is the replace FU mantra. OK. One win does that I guess. I’d still like to reevaluate after the season and see if we can find a coach #1.

Wake says he’s out there. Maybe NCSU? UL? Coach poaching is a difficult, combat sport in its own right. As a fan, I just don’t want to get stuck in a loop where Coach #2 may get marginally - MARGINALLY - better each year, and is retained.

At the same time, VT is competing with all of the other teams out there in the same or worse situations. And schools are already making coaching changes mid-season (KU replacing a coordinator, for example).

I’m glad coaches #2 won the last game, and I hope that the team progresses significantly, week to week, for the rest of the year. If not, this post may be irrelevant anyway. At the end of the season, though, I hope that VT makes a careful and sincere evaluation of the direction of this team and the program.

And find that coach #1 that performs to the high moral and ethical standards fans demand at Virginia Tech.
