From a "national radar" standpoint, making the Playoffs is the only thing


that "matters." You could say that the Playoffs is on par with the NCAA Tournament in men's basketball, the NYD6 bowls might be the NIT now, and the remaining bowls are either the CBI or CIT. However from a "fan" perspective, it can vary greatly depending on their team. It wouldn't surprise me if most fans are on the opposite spectrum from the "national radar." During the pre-BCA/BCS Era a case could be made that the "fan viewpoint" and the "national radar" may have been in sync with each other because "all bowl games mattered." The divergent didn't start to occur until the creation of the BCA and it has been slowly widening every since.
