Until the early 90s, VT was on about the same plane as ECU


Seriously, there was basically zero separation between VT and ECU. VT was "that token 8th team" the Big East needed to have enough programs to form a conference. VT and Temple were the projected doormats. Rutgers was the program considered poised to take off.
