Boise State is an interesting comparison because Boise State

built its reputation on beating marquee team in OOC and bowl games. I am not sure if VT had that same level of success during the 90s or if people remember VT winning a select few OOC games or bowl games against marquee opponents (i.e. Texas in the Sugar Bowl) and the rest conference games (i.e. Miami, Syracuse, WVU). During the 90s, it just seemed like any time VT played a marquee opponent in an OOC game or bowl game, then VT was on the losing end.

1991

1992
(21) NC State - T?

1993

1994

(NR) Tenn - L (Gator Bowl)

1995

(9) Texas - W (Sugar Bowl)

1996

(6) Neb - L (Orange Bowl)

1997
(7) UNC - L (Gator Bowl)

1998
(NR) Clemson - W?
(NR) Alabama - W? (Music City Bowl)

1999
(24) UVA - W
(1) FSU - L (Sugar Bowl)

I put a ? by a couple because I am not sure if they were considered to be a "marquee opponent" at the time and/or the program (i.e. Clemson and Alabama) was going through a "down period" when compared to when the program is at the top of its game.
