Joining the SEC would have helped the cause to increase the demand

to that kind of numbers. However, Clemson and FSU were able to increase their demand levels and neither was a member of the SEC. Heck it could probably be argued that the FSU program didn't really take off until Bowden was named the HC in 1976. I do think it is possible that VT could have followed a similar path as either school, probably closer to FSU given that FSU was an Independent in football for all those years, if people had made different decisions at the time and taken more of a "risk."
