Just something to have a little fun with. I recall back in the day the

frustration many of us had when Foster was fielding killer defenses and our offense struggled to pull weight likewise. We won games with defense and that was just fine with CFB as he appeared okay with having an offense that gave him 20 - 24 points and let the defense do the rest. Sometimes we lost games even though the defense held the opponent to a low score but the offense could not muster enough points to cover. And in fairness, I am sure a few times the offense gave us sufficient points but the defense failed to hold the opponent down.

So fast forward to today's college football and the replacement of the I formation with pass happy offenses I have this question for you. Pretend special teams and turnovers do not exist so as not to screw up the exercise. In today's game what is the point total benchmark that signifies the offense, if scoring above this total, has done its job and the defense, if holding the opponent below this total, has done its job?

I will start by putting forth 31 points, but subject to more analysis which I probably will not bother with. (It isn't that important. lol) Fifteen or twenty years ago I may have said 24, even 21, but the game has opened up during that time.

What do you think? And if you like, what would that number have been in your opinion 15 - 20 years ago?
