Brands

B-street's post below got me thinking about brands. Establishing a strong brand is one way to out-perform your competition. So I took a stab at looking at ACC football brands, it was fun.

Clemson – we just have better athletes than you. We can do whatever we want. Suck it! Trending level – at the very top.
Florida State - we just have better athletes than you. We can do whatever we want. Oh wait, we don’t? Maybe we will again soon. Trending up.
Miami – we cleaned up our act and look what that did. It’s time for MMGA, Make Miami Great Again, back to the future we go. Trending up.
Duke – we aren’t going to get a lot of great athletes, but we will outsmart you. We run a pro-style offense that attacks mismatches. And we don’t make mistakes. Trending down.
UNC – we’ve been a sleeping giant for years thanks to the brand created by our basketball team and our pretty colors. But we hired a national icon and now we are going to be Clemson. Trending way up.
UVA – our rich alumni base finally decided they care about football and hired a good coach. We are going to be Duke, but with better athletes. We will get smart athletes who also want a good education, like Stanford and Duke. Unless we were only a flash-in-the-pan thanks to Perkins. Trending up.
NC State – we should be good every year! But we never are. We have no identity. Trending down.
Wake – we hire good coaches and work miracles with innovative schemes. But we probably can’t continue to do this. Trending down.
Pitt – we find rugged linemen and our DB’s will mug you and dare the zebras to call anything. We’re not going to consistently get lots of great skill guys so we need a great QB. But we will always be a PITA. Trending level.
Syracuse – we take advantage of our basketball arena disguised as a football stadium, run and shoot! We need great QB’s. We will always be tough at home and suck on the road. Trending down.
Georgia Tech – starting over with identity. With a charismatic new coach and very fertile recruiting grounds, we could be real trouble. Can we get some good players past Clemson and the SEC?
Louisville – see Georgia Tech. Less fertile area but also less competition. Can take lots of academically marginal players, so will always be athletic but maybe not so… well, Duke-like. Trending up.
Virginia Tech – aggressive, fast defense. All for one mentality. Good skill players on offense but questionable line play hampers diversified passing game. Once dominant but everybody else caught up to what we were doing. Major powers steal all the top in-state players. Will have to identify diamonds in the rough and out-develop other programs to rise again.
