I am Irish (dual citizen, actually).

..and I am a third generation Notre Dame fan.

( with my kids and grandkids all huge fans, that makes five generations in my very large, extended family---my Dad had ten brothers/sisters)

I am far from offended. I am very proud of the name.

It does go back to the Irish Brigade, Father Corby, etc

It goes back to the fact that a lot of the Union Army in the Civil War and much of the U.S. Cavalry in the Indian Wars were Irish (many right off the boat).

Check the list of the dead 7th Cavalry troopers at the Little Bighorn. ("Garry Owen")

Start with Major Myles Keogh and work your way down.

It goes back to the "Fighting 69th" New York Infantry Regiment (mostly Irish) in World War I.

It goes back to fighting from the lowest rung of society as Irish immigrants in a "No Irish Need Apply" land to basically taking over places like Boston and New York.

(None of that takes into account the Irish fighting the English/British occupiers of Ireland for 800 years)

Its about a small, little known Catholic college in Indiana with a whole bunch of Irish-American players taking on the big boys of the time (1920's), anywhere, anytime, by barnstorming across the country in the face of a Protestant bigoted boycott (see Fielding Yost and Michigan/Big Ten) and kicking ass.

It is very far from offensive to me.
