It's only a matter of time before the playoffs expand
Four teams making it just isn't enough. I suspect we'll see 8 before long.
Personally I'd like to see 12 I think. 5 auto-bids for P5 and a 6th auto bid for the top G5. Seed the top 4 and then seed the next 8 separately. Play that first round the week after conference championships. The lowest remaining seed from the 8 plays #1, the next lowest plays #2, etc and that's the start of the "NY6 bowls". Each year, two NY6 bowls are deemed the semi-finals. Like now, the championship will be played at some other site (a semi-final site is ineligible for that year, but a quarterfinal site could also host the NC game).
