What if

We fire him or he leaves and becomes markedly more successful than we are?

Don't know your age but if you are old enough to remember Jerry Claiborne, he put VT on the map with a couple of totally unbelievable top 25 finishes. And a DB named Beamer who wore 25. 1969, an unthinkable game at Lane televised and mighty Alabama with Bear Bryant at the helm came in. In the end, Bama won a close hard fought game and our guys put so much on the line for that one game we lost something like 4 in a row to teams we should not have. That began a pair of teams with about .500 or actual losing records. Marshall Hahn, a president known to require excellency, fired Jerry Claiborne and hired his own choice for his replacement. A flamboyant assistant from a big time program who was a pass, pass, pass and what is defense? type guy. He did not win anything like Claiborne. Next up was another flamboyant coach from a national program installing the "cool" offense of the time. LIke Fu, and Coffey, He had one of 2 good years then faded like a flower in the sun.

Meanwhile Jerry Claibornes career did better than it had been at VT.

Point is, the problem was not Claiborne, it was the expectation that given what Claiborne had done, we could do better. We could not because the expectation of what we could do was not matched by the support of the program.

We were in the same place through the lows, highs and middlings of the Beamer years and are still there.

Not saying Fu is the guy for us and I still can't tell if he is the players coach or not. But, if Fu leaves, don't be surprised if in a year or 2 he isn't doing better than us, simply because most places do not have the gap between fan expectation and reality we do.
