The turnover myth...

There is, for whatever reason, a lot of groaning about turnovers with Virginia Tech this season. Im not entirely sure where it comes from other than possibly living and dying on each possession and the tendency of fans to remember the negative plays far easier than looking at the whole picture.

So lets take a look at the numbers...

Virginia Tech:

Turnovers per game - 12.1
Turnover rate - 15.5%

Rankings:
Turnovers per game - 3rd (ACC), 68th (NCAA)
Turnover rate - 5th (ACC), 89th (NCAA)

So maybe VT has just turned it over more in the last 3 games, thats been suggested on the boards...

VT turnover rate the last 3 games - 13.1% (would be good for 18th in the NCAA and 2nd in ACC)

It is important to understand the bigger picture with regards to this team. If for no other reason than 2020-2021 isnt this team's winning window. This is a long-term build with eyes towards the next 2 seasons. Derailing the trust in these players and this system over things that dont actually matter (FT percentage) or arent happening (turnovers) can be detrimental in their development.

If anything, you want these guys taking MORE risk. Trying to fit the ball into tight spaces now, because theyll need to know how to accomplish those smaller goals in order to achieve their larger goals of championships. So if you see them trying to make a play and inadvertently turn the ball over, just trust that it is just a part of the game and part of their maturation.

For context, Gonzaga averages 1.1 less turnovers per game than VT. Baylor has 1 less TOTAL turnover on the season in an equal amount of games. I dont think those programs have a turnover issue either...
