"Arguably Tech’s best recruiter (Darryl Tapp) just left, and with Justin Fuente’s long-term job status in question, it’s not realistic to expect highly-touted recruits to be banging down Tech’s door right now.

People talk about expanding the recruiting staff, but there’s no money for that right now, apparently. Virginia Tech hasn’t even been able to staff the Student-Athlete Performance Center. There are no cooks or chefs. The athletic department is still using local businesses to cater grab-and-go meals. That’s the nature of finances right now. Even if Tech wanted to expand the recruiting staff, the salaries offered need to be improved to attract people that are actually good at those jobs.

Tech recently lost Director of On-Campus Recruiting Alex White to UNC. She’s a UNC grad, so it’s understandable that she would make the move. However, the concerning part is that her role at UNC is actually a slight demotion from her role at Tech, yet her salary was vastly increased, we’re told by a person with knowledge of the situation. So in effect, UNC is paying more money for their lesser-important jobs than Tech is playing for their very important jobs. "
