It cannot be underestimated how much of a detriment VT's location is for capturing/retaining fans. I'd love to see data on percentage of alums within 2.5 hours of campus location versus other schools. I live 4 hours away with a family and I'd have to make a lot of sacrifices to attend a 2 hour basketball game. I graduated over 20 years ago and have only seen them twice - both in DC in postseason tournaments. And I probably follow the team more than 95% of grads.

That said, I know this is just one factor. Just not a good basketball culture.
