Here's the thing about your last two sentences, though.


Personally, I don't see that direct correlation.

What I see is that VT spent more on football from 2011-2015 than it did from 2007-2010. A huge portion of that money went to the "CEO" and his assistants. And that increased spending did not improve the on-field product, it got worse.

If we all had crystal balls and there was a direct, one to one relationship between more spending and more success, then yeah, most fans would probably be OK ponying up for a bit more. But it's a crap shoot.

In general, college costs, including sports, only seem to go in one direction, despite anything going on in the real world. How we got to a point where football coaches make more than 20x the average fan's salary, and athletes already getting a full college ride are now entitled to spending money, is quite a story. At some point the bubble will burst and more and more fans will say, enough is enough. That doesn't mean they are not fans, it's just that for most of us, money is not an infinite resource and "keeping up with the Joneses" in the college sports arms race is not a viable long term strategy for all but about 20 ginormous schools.

And for the record, yes I am a member of the Hokie Club.
