VT doesn't play man much anymore, but we have played man every game.

There's a difference.

The good offenses have identified which formations and coverages put their wide receivers in man. The offense can line up in particular formation that tells the QB where to go in those situations.

Not to mention, all of those jump balls were against various receivers, not the same receivers or just the opposing team's best WR. In both games vs Tennessee and ECU it was against multiple receivers that made those big plays on our corners.

Jump balls are pretty much always 50/50 when executed correctly, but the slightest loss of technique can put the receiver or cornerback in better position to make the catch. We see that all the time when Jerod Evans throws up to Isaiah Ford or Bucky Hodges.

The issue I'm noticing are the inconsistencies of our cornerbacks in deep man coverage. The film tells opposing offensive coordinators that if nothing else is working on offense, just determine when VT is man, audible to isolate the corner, and chuck it up because VT has given those up in the past. Those plays are game changers.

That's all I'm pointing out. Overall the defense has been playing great. I'm sure Bud and the DB coaches are very aware of this and working on being more consistency with their technique.
