Like the OSU/Michigan game. If there were an 8 team playoff, that game wouldn't have meant anything, bc most likely both teams would get in regardless of the outcome. Also, big 10 champ game would be less meaningful because Mich and OSU would be in already without playing in it. It would only decide if Penn St or Wisc got in.

It could be similar to when an NFL team has their division locked up by week 14, and they bench their starters. In the 8 team scenario, Bama could basically bench all starters (to keep healthy) in the SEC champ game and still make the playoffs. who wants to watch that?
