Nationally speaking I do think it is more common than you realize


However, I probably wouldn't say it is prevalent per se. I do think it somewhat depends on where the fraternity/sorority houses are located in relation to campus and the main rows around campus. Also, you may even include off campus apartment that are known to have a more "rowdier" reputation in relation to campus and the main roads. For example you may see and notice JMU students do it because a lot of off campus housing or fraternity/sorority houses are located on either Main Street or Port Republic Road (high traffic roads). However, you may not notice it at VT (assuming there are students that do it) because the fraternity/sorority house are kinda off to themselves and most the off campus isn't located on or possibly easily visible from a high traffic road (i.e. Prices Fork, Rt. 460).
