There really are traffic studies (referred to above) that show traffic flows better if all lanes are used and cars zipper merge at the end of the lane. The zipper merge is designed for high-traffic situations. It keeps cars moving until it thins out. The backup actually gets longer if the last half-mile of a lane goes unused.
