Those with better memories weigh in on my thoughts here...I seem to remember when George Welsh had pulled UVa up and the Hoos were getting most of the top Virginia HS stars they wanted head-to-head with VT, as Frank Beamer was trying to pull VT up.
I was living on the Left Coast and had a time-consuming job, but I remember being surprised that UVa lost a top-notch running back to VT, that being Ken Oxendine of Thomas Dale. That seemed to me to represent the first kind of Vienna sausage out of the can for VT...and, over time, the Commonwealth increasingly swung VT's way.
Is that close to correct? BTW, Wikipedia says that Oxendine finished HS in 1994, and that he married a Playboy Playmate just before his 37th birthday.
