What I've noticed about our running game
I've went back and rewatched a lot of our offensive possessions. Our running game has been pretty lackluster. I noticed a few reasons why.
Spacing on the offensive line. It appears when we run the ball we lineup with our spacing too tight most of the time. We actually get in each other's way and cannot get to the second level. The poor spacing also makes it difficult to get to the correct defender and get a hand on him much less block him.
The other spacing issue comes from pulling linemen. Usually the guards take a bad angle and pull too deep. This keeps creating extra space and it takes longer for the guard to get to his guy. The rb has to slow down and the play gets blown up. We are seeing more defenses play a 2 technique so pulling a backside guard makes sense. When our guards are pulling the man covering them tends to hug his hip and follow. We are not doing a decent job of getting the play ahead of this defender or a chip of him. Defensive ends are eating our running game alive
For some reason our ball carriers seem to oddly run straight into defenders as well. Vision is something that cannot be taught. [Post edited by OrangeHokieFan at 10/23/2017 7:41PM]
