Post-Game Thoughts From a Miami Fan

Just as I did last week before the game, I am stopping by to see your thoughts about Saturday night.

I'm not here to rub salt in any wounds, so I am somewhat hesitant to post this because it may be taken the wrong way. But here goes.

First, I know we pulled away a little at the end of third, but a few plays here and there before half and in the early third quarter, and we are looking at an entirely different result.

Second, we Cane fans do this as well and are no better, but I am amazed at the number of people looking at Saturday night as some sort of negative statement about the status of the VT program. You all took us to the woodshed last year, and we returned the favor this year. In my mind, our new head coaches are 1-1 against each other, with each sporting a home victory. Just look at the crowd that showed up on Saturday night -- you all know that we don't get that for regular games, even night games against other random ACC opponents. That says a lot about we all think about the Hokies. In many ways, it's an odd rivalry, but it's a great one for both programs to sell -- and for the ACC. Yeah, our wins takes the Coastal away from you guys this year (finally!), but in the long run, this is a benefit to both programs. You can already tell that next year's game at Lane is going to be crazy!

Third, I do want to address the turnover chain and Miami's image. I'm glad that many of the posters here get it -- this has become a huge marketing gimmic, but that's it. One of the many reasons why ESPN and others are making such a big deal out of the chain is because it fits exactly with the Miami image -- gaudy, ostentatious, etc. But that's exactly what it is -- an image. It doesn't say anything about the Miami players being "me" players, as opposed to team players. In fact, those of us close to the program definitely see the team as much closer this year than we were in the Golden era. Moreover, the turnover chain is just supposed to be fun -- that's something that a lot of players and recruits (even for other teams) seem to understand. Making it some social commentary on our thuggishness, or the Miami culture, misses the point.

Finally, hopefully those VT fans who came to the game had a great time! I didn't see or hear much back and forth between our fanbases, other than typical banter -- and even that was quite civil. The atmosphere in Hard Rock was what we want, and as Cane fans we have you all to thank for that. We need big games to bring out many of our fans, unfortunately.

Now, please go destroy GT and their triple option!

Go Canes!
