They may have felt it was more likely to catch GT off guard


Like if they convert the down, GT is most likely going to be sitting on every route, figuring VT can't run the ball to make up the yardage with so few timeouts. That 1-on-1 matchup, getting Cam isolated like that, may not have happened on subsequent plays if the short down had been converted. I mean, at that point in the game, having already needed the conversions they did just to move the ball to that point, nothing was looking very likely. Maybe they felt like they had a 15% chance instead of a 10% one.
