The year before
the VT-UCLA game in EP Southern Cal went to the Sun Bowl. There were a lot of negative comments about El Paso from their players and fans.
The local newspapers were still writing about it a year later. But they also had a lot of articles appreciating how VT embraced the game. They particularly liked Woody Baron's effort (in Spanish; Spanish Major I think) saying how much the Hokies wanted to be there.
I agree with you. There's no reason to rip El Paso. After the Appalachians the Franklin Mountains (~ the same altitude) are hard to "accept" and it is a decidedly different culture. If it isn't to the OP's taste fine. But it is an interesting city that was hospitable to the Hokies.
