Schools can't say that attendance would suffer because the students aren't back yet because their are several schools (i.e. UCLA) who are still on the quarter system. UCLA's first game takes place over Labor Day weekend, but the start of the new quarter doesn't occur until the end of September (2-3 weeks after the regular season starts). Students manage to show up to those early home games.
