UVA basketball is the expectations trap like mid-2000s VT football was

They're good, really good. Unique defensive style, and the combo of coaching and recruiting into that into a truly elite defense every single season. They have a really high winning percentage, and constantly compete for conference titles, and can make some noise towards national titles.

However, because the same players have to play both offense and defense, they also have to rely on half-court sets and not race up and down the floor all game. Limiting the total number of possessions for either team like this requires them to be pretty efficient on offense, and, if they have a cold night shooting, or maybe the other team is draining tons of low-percentage outside shots, can put them at risk of losing to teams that they really should beat. And therein lies the comparison, VT's pedestrian football offense led them into having not much margin for error, and this would lead to them losing to some stooge (remember when Reggie freakin' Ball racked up like 200 passing yards in the first quarter in Lane in '06).

So it goes with UVA, they'll win a tremendous number of games, look impressive over good teams, and will be so objectively successful that you'll start to really believe they can make a title run, and then, bam, trap sprung, and it's probably almost 1:1 odds that the team that knocked them out was a team that they should've otherwise beaten 90% of the time.
