Sometimes the Super Bowl champ didn't win their division
But you could make the argument that all the division champs at least get in.
But in all reality, the P5 and the G5 are truly playing at different levels. As for opening up the playoff, how in the world do you do that without expanding? You have 10 conferences and four spots.
My opinion is do 8 spots. All conference champs ranked in the top 16 get a spot. Period. You'll still end up with 2-3 Wild Card spots because the MAC, CUSA, SBC, MWC, and AAC won't all trot out top 16 champions. You might even have an occasional upset year where there's a conference championship upset and the conference champ of the Big 10 for example is not top 16 and fails to earn an auto-slot (though I'm sure rankings would be manipulated to ensure that there is a Big 10 team that qualifies... whether by inflating the ranking of the champion or by inflating the ranking of the highest ranked non-champion to be one of the Wild Cards).
I don't really wish to see the playoff get bigger than 8 teams.
