I think VT is currently in no-man's land.

They're basically playing one post guy -- Blackshear. Horne has only played 17 minutes in 3 ACC games, and that includes a DNP vs. Pitt.

Buzz has built this team around guards and wings. But he doesn't press and create turnovers, and they don't rebound very well, so there aren't many runout opportunities. And those guards and wings are now missing their shots. So the advantage of having so many guards and wings on the roster is nullified.

I think Chris Clarke is unguardable in the paint, but he's deferring to other players and isn't being very aggressive at this point. At times, yes, but he's not being consistently aggressive. He's only talking 5.4 shots a game, when he should be taking, in my opinion, at least 10 per game. (Zach LeDay took 10 shots per game the last two years.) When he goes inside and attacks the rim in the halfcourt, he gets fouled a lot, but IMO, he doesn't attack enough.

So, my answer: (1.) make more shots (duh). (2.) Get more post production from someone in addition to Blackshear (duh). (3.) Figure out a way to leverage all of these guards and wings into a style of play that maximizes their strengths.

But really, those are all esoteric things, and Buzz is way smarter than I at figuring these things out. For me to sit here and type what Buzz needs to do is silly. I don't know what I'm talking about, and he does.

The bottom line really is that these guys need a Seth Allen on the outside and a Zach LeDay on the inside. Seth was confident and wanted the ball in his hands, and Zach set the tone and was productive down low. JRob is doing his best to be Seth, but he's not there yet (and might not ever get there -- he's a junior), and no one is playing inside with the attitude of LeDay.

I don't think it's any more complicated than that. VT is skilled, but the heart and attitude aren't there right now. That's not an insult to the players -- it's their personalities, and not a lack of skill or work ethic.

If I were Buzz, I'd do something to make Chris Clarke really mad. I'd put Chris Clarke in a bad mood every day. Then see what happens on the court. 😆
