Depends on how the buyout is structured
IIRC, the buyout on PJ's old contract was essentially full payment of the contract. The extension might actually make it easier to fire him or at least it might not make it any harder. This would still afford the perceived stability for recruiting purposes.
To me, it speaks volumes that he's only being extended two years until 2022. If they were serious about keeping him around for the long haul, he would have been extended to 2024 or longer.
